Vanilla Strawberry® Panicle Hydrangea

Vanilla Strawberry® Panicle Hydrangea

A sweet treat for the garden! Vanilla Strawberry panicle hydrangea has big, cone-shaped blooms of white and pink. True to its name, the vivid strawberry-pink color develops as the blooms age, and starts at the bottom, for a shaded look. We recommend growing Vanilla Strawberry with at least some sunshine each day to improve its stem strength. A very nice addition to a flower garden!

What makes Vanilla Strawberry different from other panicle hydrangeas?
  • Large flowers look like, and are shaped like, ice cream cones

Details:
Name:
Hydrangea paniculata 'Rehny' pp#20,670
Hardiness: USDA zones 3-8
Height + width: 6-7' tall x 4-5' wide
Light: Full to part sun
Soil: Any well-drained soil will do. Though dry conditions are unlikely to harm an established plant, prolonged drought will cause flowers to brown and wilt instead of develop a good pink color.
Pruning: Blooms on new wood; prune back by one-third in late winter/early spring for better habit and a slight improvement in stem strength.
Water: Average water needs. Does not tolerate wet conditions.
Fertilizer: Fertilize once in early spring with a rose fertilizer if desired.
Bloom time: Summer, early fall
Bloom color: White, aging to blush pink. That color persists through frost.
Uses: Vanilla Strawberry hydrangea makes a nice hedge or specimen, but should be given plenty of space, as its stems bend in a soft, romantic way, especially after heavy rains.
